"The first time I bought wine en primeur (as a “future” from the barrel) I was utterly clueless – and extremely lucky. It was 2001, a good time to be buying bordeaux. I bought one case of Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2000, the second wine of Chateau Margaux.
I hadn’t tasted it, but my choice was guided by the number of times I had watched Withnail & I as a student, coupled with the fact that I couldn’t afford the Grand Vin. It was a fortunate choice: second wines of Bordeaux first growths became much more sought-after. I had bought the case to drink, but ended up selling it for about four times the amount I had paid.
The fine wine market today is a very different beast."
