The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio alle Mura (with 10,000 bottles produced) pours from the bottle with lavish richness and a saturated, dark color that is quintessential Brunello. This special selection of fruit from a single vineyard is fermented in both stainless steel and oak, but secondary fermentation happens in barrique. Most of the wine (90%) is aged in barrique for 30 months. In a cool vintage like 2013 that plays its best cards in terms of structure and acidity, this winemaking approach is not heavy handed. In fact, this beautiful wine is driven by a unique sense of momentum and forward thrust that should carry it through its long aging evolution. Give this riserva at least five more years of cellar aging before you pop the cork.
