Tasted at the Bollinger RD vertical in Paris. The 1985 RD has a refined, smoky nose that does not have the vigour or tenacity of the 1988. Good definition, the Chardonnay element coming through a little more than I expected with touches of litchi and a hint of white truffle. The palate is taut on the entry, very focused and surprisingly tight given its age. The finish is very refined and poised, not complex, but it is similar to the balletic 1995 RD. Elegant, almost dainty, this is an understated but classy champagne. Tasted July 2011.
