Utterly splendid ancient domaine, perhaps the finest in the northern Rhône and among the best in France. The Chave family own plots in all 7 lieux-dits on the Hermitage hill, which contributes to the marvellous complexity and finesse of their wines. Any of the components felt to be below standard will be sold off in order to protect the integrity of the wine. In this respect Jean Louis Chave has also established a small merchant label “Selection Jean-Louis Chave” producing Côtes du Rhône ‘Mon Couer’, as well as red Hermitage ‘Farconnet’ and white Hermitage ‘Blanche’. These will give you a very good idea of what the Domaine wines offer at a much lower price. Cuvée Cathelin is a special red selection which sees more new wood and is produced only in top years. Both red and white Domaine Hermitage are extraordinarily ageworthy and are not wines to approach in their youth. Also produced are a very good Saint-Joseph and an extraordinary vin de paille, the latter only in tiny quantities. (DM)
