What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is downloaded onto ‘terminal equipment’ (e.g. a computer or smartphone) when the user accesses a website. It allows the website to recognise that user’s device(s) and store some information about the user’s preferences or past actions.

How do we use cookies?

We collect a number of cookies from our members and Platform visitors for various reasons, for reasons that help us to deliver you a better experience when accessing your account on our Platform, and to track which pages and content you are most interested in.

We run tests to improve the ease of navigation for visitors and members, and show different pages to test which ones are preferable.

We use cookies to monitor and improve our services. We include links on our Platform to external content. Cookies may be used to track your visits to third party sites with whom we have formal or informal content and marketing agreements to show them how many visits they receive from the Platform.

What types of cookie are there and which ones do we use?

  • Persistent cookies remain on a device for a set period of time specified in the cookie. They are activated each time you visit the Platform.
  • Session cookies are temporary. They allow Us to link the actions of a visitor or member during a browser session. A browser session starts when you open the browser window and finishes when you close it. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

Cookies also have different functions.

Strictly necessary cookies are essential to navigate around a website and use its features. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to use basic services like registration. These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing or remembering where you've been on the Internet.

Examples of how we use strictly necessary cookies include allowing you to sign in as a registered member or identifying each unique visitor, so site numbers can be analysed.

Performance cookies collect anonymous data for statistical purposes on how visitors and members use the Platform, they don’t contain personal information, and are used to improve your user experience of a website.

Examples of how we may use performance cookies include gathering data about visits including numbers of visitors and visits, length of time spent on the site, pages clicked on or where visitors have come from.

Performance cookies also help us to understand how you use the Platform. For example, whether or not you have visited before, what you looked at or clicked on and how you found us. We can then use this data to help improve our services.  If we were to use an independent online service provider to perform these services for us, third party cookies would be set by them.

Functionality cookies allow you to customise how the Platform is adapted to your preferences. These cookies can remember usernames, language preferences and regions.

Examples of how we may use functionality cookies include storing your user preferences on Your Account page, or restricting the number of times you're shown certain content such as pricing charts if you are accessing the Platform on a free plan.

How do I control my cookies?

You should be aware that certain preferences and personalisation may be lost if you delete cookies. We do not recommend turning cookies off when using our Platform for those reasons.

Most browsers accept cookies automatically, but you can alter the settings of your browser to erase cookies or prevent automatic acceptance if you prefer.

Generally you have the option to see what cookies you’ve got and delete them individually, block third party cookies or cookies from particular sites, accept all cookies, to be notified when a cookie is issued or reject all cookies. The following links are provided for you to understand how cookie preferences work in different Internet browsers.
